Symmetry / Simetría.
English.
Symmetry is a geometrical transformation of a figure so the new points have the same distance to another geometrical element.
Axial symmetry.
Axial symmetry has a line calles axis as reference. Corresponding points are joined by lines perpendicular to the axis. The following example shows that lines AÁ, BB’… are perpendicular to the axis in the middle, line e.
Other examples of axial symmetry:
Axial symmetry is equivalent to flipping. Here you are a video:
Central symmetry.
When drawing central symmetry, it happens that the reference element is a point, the centre or symmetry, instead of an axis. Each point of the original figure is joined with its symmetrical with a line which passes through the centre of symmetry. The distance between the original point and the centre of symmetry is equal to the distance between the centre and the symmetrical point. Watch the following examples:
Central symmetry is equivalent to turning. Here you are a video:
Activity.
Create a free drawing using axial and central symmetry. You will use just one A4 piece of paper, dividing it into two equal parts, with margins of 1cm for each side. Watch the following example as a reference:
